GLA Newsletter - June 2017
Coming to you live from the world ☀️ GLA teens are taking advantage of the summer sun by painting classrooms in Tanzania, observing tons of wildlife in Costa Rica’s cloud forest and more. It's the June Solstice edition of the GLA Newsletter.
Global Leadership Adventures Newsletter - Experience GLA

The Summer Solstice marks the official start of Summer, and is a day that’s been celebrated for thousands of years for ushering more light and warmth into the world. GLA students around the globe took advantage of the extra sunlight by cementing and painting a classroom in Tanzania, seeing tons of wildlife in Costa Rica’s cloud forest and more (catch all the updates in our 2017 program blogs!). We’re over the moon that summer is finally here—and are still enrolling students to join us for epic adventures in July and August.

Got your sights set on medicine?
Our Dominican Republic: Global Health Initiative program is designed for teens interested in studying medicine and public health, and teaches an important lesson: Healthcare is the sum of many parts. It spans not only the roles doctors and nurses play in the operating room, but also government policies, infrastructure, the environment, social perceptions of health and more. (This program sells out every year—so nab your spot in a 2018 session while space is still available!)

Fred Swaniker receives an honorary doctorate degree at Middlebury College
GLA’s Co-Founder started out as a working teen, too
Did you know? The idea for Global Leadership Adventures first sprouted in the mind of Fred Swaniker, a native of Ghana, Stanford grad, TED Fellow and educational entrepreneur. But long before that, he worked at a hardware store and sold fried chicken! Fred reflects on the lessons his first jobs taught him and how they still apply today.

GLA Question of the Month
Question of the Month
“I’m looking ahead to next summer! Is it too early to sign up for a GLA program?” Not at all! As the saying goes, the early bird gets the worm—or, in our case, first pick when it comes to program dates and topics. 2018 session dates are already live for every program on our website, and so far, topics that sell out every year, like Medicine & Public Health and Children, are still open for enrollment.

Words of Wisdom
“The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world's joy.” When traveling, we take comfort in the fact that the same light and warmth streaming through our guesthouse or ecolodge windows also shines through our bedroom blinds back home. It’s also these rays that warm our oceans, give us seasons to celebrate, and allow seedlings everywhere to unfurl into tall trees. (Sunrise shot from, our partner in the Dominican Republic!)
