Global Leadership Adventures Newsletter - Experience GLA

Happy National Volunteer Month! Not only is volunteering a critical way to help impactful projects get accomplished around the world, it's actually good for the volunteers, too. Research shows that giving back establishes strong relationships, improves health and gives us a sense of purpose—three things we could also apply to our travel experiences. A record number of students are now choosing to travel for more than just their bucket lists—they're doing it to volunteer, to connect with new communities and to find their place in the world.

Life's what you make it
We love this one-minute video from the Dominican Republic, shot and edited by GLA program alum Mary Ado. Ride with Mary along rural byways, cuddle island puppies and piggyback the local kids. The work here is meaningful, and the Caribbean water's warm. "Life's what you make it," the soundtrack says, and here, it's pretty sweet.

South Africa: Adventure 101
When we set out to create a program for teens passionate about exploring the world, we couldn’t think of a better place to offer it than South Africa. This program is chock full of adventure: Students live on a global campus with peers from around the world, go on an African safari, explore Cape Town and even go shark cage diving.

GLA Question of the Month
Question of the Month
“I'd love to volunteer abroad, but I want to stay close to home. Is that possible?” Yes! We offer programs in destinations that can be reached in just a short flight, but feel a world away. Examples: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Peru. Flights to Central America are some of the most economical, and this region is gorgeous—so choosing a program here is both a rewarding and savvy option.

Words of Wisdom
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Anne Frank reminds us that we can plan and plan, and wait for just the right opportunity to come along... but starting right where we are is often less scary than we think! Take the first step to #bethechange today—whether that's a random act of kindness, or talking to somebody about volunteering abroad.
